Massachusetts Homeopathic Hospital (first) opens.

(Jan.)(1855) Architect: William Ralph Emerson. The 16-bed hospital is located on the upper floors of a building at 14 Burroughs Place. Incorporated in 1855, it subsequently becomes the largest homeopathic hospital in the U.S. The hospital moves to a new building on East Concord Street in 1873,* departs from the homeopathic tradition in 1921, and is renamed the Massachusetts Memorial Hospital in 1929 and then University Hospital in the 1960s. It merges with the Boston University School of Medicine to form the Boston University Medical Center in 1962.*
